If you have an interest in law enforcement, this course is for you. Students will work directly with law enforcement officers to find out how the criminal justice system works. Students also have the opportunity to tour the Public Safety Building, Police Academy and Spokane Airport Security Facility.

  • Radio communications

  • Criminal acts and impacts on society
  • Interpersonal communications and problem solving skills

  • Accident investigation and accident reports
  • Traffic enforcement

Upon successful completion of the Criminal Justice course at the NEWTECH Skill Center, students will earn 1.5 Elective Credits per semester towards their Washington State High School Diploma. Students may take the class in both Fall and Spring semesters, earning 3 Elective Credits in a school year.

Upon successfully completing this program, students may be eligible for up to 10 college credits at Spokane Community College.

Officer Kelly Busse of the Spokane Police Department has had 25+ years of experience in Law Enforcement.  Officer Busse holds an Associate of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Spokane Community College. He has been the Criminal Justice Instructor at the NEWTECH Skill Center since 2007.

The Criminal Justice program at the NEWTECH Skill Center is a cooperative effort between the Spokane Police Department and NEWTECH to help spark interest and jump start high school students' careers in Criminal Justice.

During the summer, Officer Busse is a full-time patrol officer for the City of Spokane.

Officer Busse models his course delievery after the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Basic Academy.  His goal is for students to obtain a foundation for a future career in the Criminal Justice field.  The course curriculum includes Civics, Ethics, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedures, Patrol Procedures, Forensics and Report Writing.
